The joy of plushies has been around for many years. A plushie is a stuffed animal made of fabric, wool, or synthetic fur. They are often given to children as gifts and are found in toy stores all over the world. But have you ever wanted to make your own? This blog post will teach you how!

What Are Custom Plushies and Why Should I Make Them?

A custom plushie is a stuffed animal that looks like…well…you! It’s made in the image of you, your best friend, your favorite pet, and more. How Do I Sew My Plushie?

Now, let’s take a look at all of the steps needed to make your custom plushie!

Step One: Gather or draw out your design If you are making a plushie like this one here, start by drawing out how you want it to look on paper. Make sure that when you are done with this step, it is large enough to fit on the fabric you plan on using for your project.

Step Two: Pin the pattern to your fabric and cut it out! Once you have drawn your design, start pinning it to the material. Make sure that you make a copy of this design on a separate scrap piece of paper or in another file so that no mistakes are made when cutting! Next, use your scissors or rotary cutter to carefully cut out the shape of your plushie.

Step Three: Sew together the front and back panels If it has been decided that two different types of fabrics will be used for this project, pin the right sides together around the edges and sew them together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving a 2-3 inch opening at one end. If all is going well, turn inside out and iron flat.

What supplies do I need?

Before we get into all the step-by-step details of creating a plushie, let’s go over what materials and tools you will need to buy before starting this project. (This could be anything from fleeing to felt depending on what type of plushie you want to make)

If not using flee, a machine is required for this step and is used to keep your stitches even with no puckering. This can be any pencil or pen that will wash off in the water. I recommend having one with an eraser as well as it makes things easier after drawing your pattern onto the fabric before cutting.) (Required if making more than one plushie. Although they are better used as stencils with fabrics like felt, sometimes they do work on fleeing.)

Once you have gathered all of your supplies, it’s time to start sewing your plushie! Be sure to use a pencil or pen that will wash out in the water when drawing your pattern onto the fabric before cutting.

Gather or draw out your design. If making a custom plushie like this one here, start by drawing out how you want it to look on paper. Make sure that when you are done with this step, it is large enough to fit on the fabric you plan on using for your project.

Next, pin the pattern to the right side of the fabric and cut it out! Once you have drawn your design, start pinning it to the material. Pin them in at least two places to ensure that they do not move when you are cutting.

Once again, make sure that you make a copy of this design on another separate scrap piece of paper or in another file so that no mistakes are made when cutting! Then use your scissors or rotary cutter (I recommend wearing safety goggles while using any type of cutting tools like these) carefully cut out the shape of your plushie.

Sew together the front and back panels right sides together around the edges leaving a 2-3 inch opening at one end with either your sewing machine or by hand. If it has been decided that two different types of fabrics will be used for this project, pin the right sides together around the edges and sew them together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving a 2-3 inch opening at one end.

If all is going well, turn inside out and iron flat. Now it’s time for stuffing! I recommend using polyester fiberfill or some other form of high-quality stuffing since this will be the insides of your plushie, you want it to stand the test of time!

Use your scissors to cut open the opening that you left when sewing up your plushies fabric pieces together. Once opened up, stuff until firm but not too overstuffed so that new materials can still move through easily.

For example, if making amigurumis’, don’t fill them completely full with hair unless they are supposed to look like this because of how difficult it would be to sew around later on.

Once you have stuffed as much as possible using one hand, use your other hand to scrunch the fabric together and make it as flat as possible. Then sew shut the remaining opening with a slip stitch or ladder stitch (I recommend ladder stitch because it is easy to do and looks more professional). Place an armature inside of your plushie (and/or any accessories like keychains, purses, and bows) before sewing up the last seam if needed.

Tips to Help You Create the Perfect Stuffed Animal

  1. Don’t start your project unless you plan on finishing it. It is best to make one plushie at a time or in batches of plushies within the same theme, like all cats or monsters. This way, when parts of the design are getting hard to see when they’re small, you can set that piece aside and go back to it once you’ve moved onto another part of the pattern that may be more visible.
  2. Use pencils or pens with erasers so if you mess up drawing your pattern on the material, just erase it and start over fresh! Also, remember which fabrics will wash out in the water so this doesn’t happen either! I recommend using fabric markers but only on felt because the pen will not wash out on other fabrics!
  3. If unsure of how to do something, just Google it! There are thousands of amazing tutorials online that can really help you get started if you’re a beginner at making plushies. Also, don’t forget to use a needle and thread to sew or a sewing machine, depending on your preference and skill level.
  4. Sometimes hand stitching can produce better results because when using sewing machines, they tend to leave fabric threads behind which aren’t too attractive in plush animals.
  5. One way I like working with my patterns is by turning them sideways (upside down) so the face isn’t facing me while I’m working with it and making sure all parts of the design are symmetrical when drawing it onto the fabric. Just make sure your pattern lines up with the centerline of the fabric pieces you are cutting out!
  6. Don’t be afraid to give yourself breaks in between plushie projects if needed! Sometimes people tend to overwork themselves which then makes us less productive and more stressed so giving yourself a break or two can really help you keep your motivation as well as keep healthy (eating, sleeping, practicing relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga).

And that’s it! This is what you need to know about making custom plushies. If there are any other questions you might have, feel free to leave them in the comments below and I will try and answer and update this post as needed =) Good luck with your first handmade plushie project!
