Are you looking for an easy and cute craft to make with your kids? If so, we have the perfect project for you! We will show you how to turn a pair of socks into a fun plushie that your child can call their own. In this article, we will take you through all the steps to create this adorable toy from scratch. With just a few supplies and some basic sewing skills, anyone can create these stuffed animals in less than an hour.

How to Make Sock Plushies?

All you need to make these cute toys are two socks and some stuffing. You can choose any color of socks that you’d like! As for the stuffing, we will use poly-fil in this tutorial, but you can also substitute it with cotton balls or craft felt.

You’ll need 2 matching socks, stuffing (cotton balls or poly-fil), and yarn. The only thing you may want to add is scissors so you can cut off the feet of one sock after turning it inside out.

Supplies:

  • Two matching patterned socks (can be solid colored)
  • Stuffing (we used a 12 oz bag of Poly-Fil Extra Soft Quick Drying Polyester Fiber Fill )
  • Scissors & Thread (or sewing machine)

Step 1: Cut off Sock’s Foot

Cut off one foot from each of your matching socks. Set aside the feet from one of your socks if you would like to create a different stuffed animal, like a cat.

Step 2: Turn Socks Inside Out

Turn one of your socks inside out, so you are looking at the sock’s tube on the inside layer. If you cut off the foot of this sock, you will sew up along this edge to form an open end for stuffing.

Step 3: Stuff & Sew Cuff

Stuff your sock with poly-fil or whatever material you are using until it is firm but still comfortable enough to cuddle. Make sure that the tube section is free of any lumpy material. Once your plushie has reached its desired fullness, sew shut the upper opening by hand with thread, or by sewing machine if preferred. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the second sock.

Step 4: Sew Socks Together

Turn your plushies right side out and place them so their soles are touching, inside out. Pin in place and sew around the upper edge by hand or machine. Make sure to leave about a 1-inch opening for turning before you sew all the way around. Once finished, turn them right side out and stuff with poly-fil or any other material that you like (we used cotton balls in this example).

Step 5: Close Yarn Cone

Push yarn through a hole in the stuffed animal’s bottom to look like mouth/nose, tie off at the end of the cone to hold the yarn in place.

Step 6: Trim Plushie’s Arms ()

Optionally trim arms to the desired length, leave enough yarn to tie onto stuffed animals.

Step 7: Attach Arms

Tie arms onto the stuffed animals with long strands of yarn to form hands.

Your plushies are now complete! Now all you have to do is find the perfect place for these cute little guys to relax and take a nap after they’ve been snuggling up with your child. Your kids will love them!

Try making more than one give as gifts or make an entire family of sock plushies. You can even change up the colors of your socks for different personalities among them! The possibilities are endless… Have fun creating your own unique sock plushies!

A yarn cone is simply a ball of yarn that has been opened up and forced onto a paper towel roll, toilet paper roll, or other tube-shaped objects to form a sort of “cone”. It is often used for making toys such as sock monkeys, sock puppets, etc. They can be found at your local craft store in the knitting/sewing section.

Some people prefer to make their own cones from an old ball of yarn by rolling it up into a coil and then wrapping masking tape around the outside until it resembles more of a cone shape. Just poke one end through the center and pull out any loose ends inside before using it with your project.

You’ll only need two matching socks. However, if your child likes to switch between their favorite characters (like changing out the family cat every day), then you may want to cut off one foot from each sock and save them in case you want to create something different later on (maybe a cat).

We suggest stuffing your plushie with poly-fil or whatever material you like best (cotton balls for this example). You can even try using 2 colors of poly-fil or cotton balls for more visual interest. Some people even use shredded fabric instead.

After you turn your plushie inside out, stuff it to its desired fullness. Then sew the top edge closed by hand or machine before turning right-side out and using yarn to tie on arms. You can even try attaching feet instead if you like (although this example does not have any). The only thing that matters is that your child loves them!

You’ll need about 1-inch of the end of the sock to use for turning once it’s sewn closed (after stuffing), so make sure to leave enough room when cutting off either end for this purpose. Otherwise, trim away at any length you like!
